Heh. <em>All<\/em> the way out of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">I step inside, ready to do nothing other than collapse in my bed\u2026and walk right into exactly what I was escaping.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">\u201cSurprise!\u201d Michaela and Peyton yell in unison, Peyton blowing into the longest party horn I\u2019ve ever seen while Michaela throws confetti in my face.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Their smiles and festive energy quickly disappear when they instantly note the scowl on it, telling of the state of mind I\u2019m still in from the sudden change of plans at work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">\u201cConnie\u2026hey, what\u2019s wrong?\u201d Pey says, concern quickly etching itself into her cheery, doe eyes as I walk inside. Without a word, I grab the glass of champagne in Michaela\u2019s hand, downing it in one go. My lack of practice with alcohol shows itself, my face contorting as I cough around it a few times until the bubbly burn dissipates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">\u201cWell, <em>someone\u2019s<\/em> in a spiffy mood,\u201d Michaela drolls, eyeing the empty glass. \u201cPretty-girl Pey and I figured we\u2019d put together a lil\u2019 somethin\u2019-somethin\u2019 to celebrate your new internship. And here I was thinking I\u2019d have to get on my knees to convince you to take <em>just<\/em> a sip.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">I set the glass down before the urge to break it overwhelms me. \u201cScrew the internship.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Michaela exchanges puzzled looks with Pey. \u201c<em>Okaaay<\/em>, who peed in <em>your<\/em> cereal?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">\u201cI just got placed in a completely different department than the one I applied for,\u201d I grumble bitterly, voicing the bad news out loud for the very first time. And hearing myself say it to the closest people in my life somehow solidifies it. My eyes dart to Michaela. \u201cAnd I have to be in San Francisco the entire time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">That part stuns them both.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">\u201cWhat the <em>heck<\/em>?\u201d Peyton frowns, her stare disbelieving. \u201cWhich department?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">I shrug off my blazer, sinking into the edge of the couch where Nyxon gingerly joins me, seeming to sense my distress. \u201cEnergy. Oil and Gas unit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">\u201c<em>What<\/em>?!\u201d she exclaims, her expression turning even more incredulous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">\u201cYeah. That\u2019s exactly what <em>\u0623\u0646\u0627<\/em> said,\u201d I sigh, too tired to get riled up all over again even though I\u2019m still one hundred percent angry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">\u201cHow did that even happen? Is it\u2026<em>possible<\/em> you accidentally selected more than one specialty?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">\u201cYou know I didn\u2019t,\u201d I counter, a bit annoyed that she\u2019d insinuate I might have been careless in my application. \u201cAnd, even if I <em>had<\/em>, it sure as hell wouldn\u2019t be <em>\u0647\u0630\u0647<\/em>!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">\u201cI know, I know,\u201d she waves her hands, apologetic, coming to sit next to me. \u201cI\u2019m sorry. I hate that I even asked. I know how hard you\u2019ve worked for this. Believe me, I do. I\u2019ve just never heard of anything like this happening before. Did you talk to your supervisor?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">I nod, defeated. \u201cCEO\u2019s already signed off on it so he has no say.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Pey\u2019s naturally-bounteous eyes go even wider. \u201cCEO, as in, Sam Covington?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">\u201cYeah,\u201d I nod sadly. \u201cFor some company called \u2018Zanergy\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">For a moment, the room goes completely silent. If I thought Peyton was bug-eyed before, I clearly didn&#8217;t know the meaning of the phrase.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">And, unexpectedly, so is <em>Michaela<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">I look between them, perplexed by their sudden muteness&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">And then, all hell breaks loose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">&#8220;Are. You. <em>Serious<\/em>?!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">&#8220;Holy <em>shit<\/em>!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">They yell at the same time, their words and voices clashing, singeing my ears. Their shouting startles me, and I look at both of them like they\u2019ve gone mad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">My forehead creases as a sense of loss suddenly overwhelms me. \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">&#8220;Connie&#8230;honey\u2026&#8221; Peyton says, her voice lowering like a doting mother trying to explain \u2018grown-up stuff\u2019 to her curiously na\u00efve child, \u201cZanergy is Richard <em>Zane<\/em><em>\u2019s<\/em> company.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">I can\u2019t stop my brow from arching itself, as if her \u201ceducative\u201d tone will help me automatically understand what the hell that even means.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">I huff, rolling my eyes. \u201cAm I supposed to know who that is? And what the hell kind of name is <em>Zanergy<\/em>?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Now it\u2019s Peyton and Michaela\u2019s turn to look at me like <em>\u0627\u0646\u0627<\/em> the one who&#8217;s lost my mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">\u201cYou\u2019re joking,\u201d Michaela blurts incredulously, side-eyeing me like I\u2019ve just spectacularly failed at life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">She shakes her head, coming to sit next to us as Peyton furiously types on her phone, presumably Googling this Zane fellow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">&#8220;Didn&#8217;t you at least look up the company when they told you about it?&#8221; my best friend asks without looking at me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">&#8220;I know it might be hard to tell, what, with my happy-go-lucky face and all,\u201d I glower, \u201cbut I wasn&#8217;t exactly foaming at the mouth to find out more about the motherfuckers who just ruined my internship.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">&#8220;Oooh, <em>language<\/em>,&#8221; Michaela teases, handing me a large platter of chips and guacamole.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">I happily stuff my face with it, trying to pacify my irritation with pre-packaged party food as they continue to talk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">&#8220;Richard Zane is one of <em>\u0627\u0644<\/em> wealthiest and most successful businessmen in this hemisphere,&#8221; Peyton elaborates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">&#8220;Not to mention, one of the <em>hottest<\/em>,&#8221; Michaela adds adamantly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Pey hands me her phone, a clear picture of the man in question blown up on the screen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Now, it\u2019s <em>\u0644\u064a<\/em> eyes that go wide as saucers, my heart flipping as I instantly recognize the pair staring back at me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><em>Oh. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><em>My. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><em>God&#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">\u201cWhat\u2019s wrong? You look like you just saw a ghost,\u201d Peyton mutters, her voice overlapping my suspended thoughts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">But I don\u2019t look at her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">\u0623\u0646\u0627 <em>\u0644\u0627 \u062a\u0633\u062a\u0637\u064a\u0639<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Not with my gaze held hostage by the one in front of me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><em>Wolf Eyes. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">&#8220;I&#8230;I ran into this guy yesterday,&#8221; I breathe, the statement one more of disbelief than an attempt to offer information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Peyton and Michaela literally go as still as statues\u2014save for their own eyeballs that go ballooning, as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">But that pause doesn\u2019t last long.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">&#8220;You <em>met<\/em> him?!!!&#8221; they exclaim in unison, even louder than before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">&#8220;Not exactly,&#8221; I wince, bringing the phone closer, as if I\u2019m not sure of what I\u2019m seeing. &#8220;More like, bizarrely <em>crashed<\/em> into him and then awkwardly apologized before running away with my tail between my legs.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Pey offers a sly grin, double-arching her brows. \u201cYou sure that was the <em>\u0641\u0642\u0637<\/em> thing between your legs?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Michaela promptly high-fives her, blatantly amused. \u201cBottoms up, Pey. Connie just had her first hit and run. Literally!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">After explosive bouts of laughter, both women proceed to simultaneously squeal and scold me; Peyton practically jumping up and down on the couch while Michaela talks my ear off about not taking advantage of fortuned opportunities, already playing out the most ridiculous scenarios in her head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">All the while, I continue to stare at the image in front of me, effortlessly mesmerized by those haunting, golden eyes even though I&#8217;m only looking at them from a still photo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">But it can\u2019t compare to seeing the real things up close and in person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Out of nowhere, this strange impulse to see them again smites me, almost as hard and palpable as the physical collision that led to my discovery of them, and I have to shake it off, realizing how crazy that is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Still, I can&#8217;t deny that there\u2019s a part of me that\u2019s somewhat excited and more than a little curious about the prospect of an encore\u2014minus the collision and stumbling\u2014even though I&#8217;ve tried countless times\u2014very <em>unsuccessfully<\/em>\u2014to get him out of my mind. But another part of me is still in utter shock by this turn of events. I honestly didn\u2019t think I\u2019d ever get to know his real name when I bumped into him yesterday, let alone the opportunity to potentially see him again. That was a complete chance meeting; an occurrence of sheer happenstance caused by nothing other than my own carelessne\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">A peculiar thought suddenly occurs to me like a belated epiphany, smashing into the current mesh of astonishment, awe and superficial elation I feel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">The memory of Wolf Eyes fills my mind\u2014along with that of the way he looked at me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Realization quickly pieces together a discombobulated puzzle, evoking irritation in me all over again. I struggle to swallow, feeling my emotions quickly morph as I stare at his picture in silence, realizing with absolute dread that the only reason I could&#8217;ve been chosen for this account is because\u2026he might\u2019ve been attracted to me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">In spite of my renewed anger, as soon as that thought forms, I feel absolutely ridiculous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">That makes no sense, <em>whatsoever<\/em>, either.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Why <em>would<\/em> he be? He could clearly have the most gorgeous of women he wants with looks like his\u2014not to mention, money.
