I brace my hand against my chest, willing my startled heart to slow down. She\u2019s the last person I expected to see, especially considering her department is way over on the other end of campus. I\u2019m not really sure how to feel about seeing her here so unexpectedly. Something has to be wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">\u201cSorry,\u201d she simply offers, \u201cbut I really needed to talk to you.\u201d She sounds urgent, and I can see more than a hint of concern in her eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">I raise my brow. \u201cYou couldn\u2019t call or text me?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">She shakes her head. \u201cI couldn\u2019t chance it. You know Bill\u2019s been suspicious of me lately and I can\u2019t have anything incriminating on my phone in case he manages to get his hands on it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">\u201cThen put a security password on your phone or something,\u201d I admonish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">\u201cYou think with <em>su <\/em>IT skills he wouldn\u2019t be able to hack it? That\u2019s like child\u2019s play to him,\u201d she counters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">I sigh. She\u2019s right. Why the hell did she have to go date a damn techie? And a ridiculously smart one, at that? I can\u2019t even believe I\u2019m having this conversation right now.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">I look around tentatively, making sure Trixie or anyone else isn\u2019t in sight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Gina lets out a sigh of her own. \u201cLook, I know how difficult it is to be in your position,\u201d she says. \u201cBelieve me, I wouldn\u2019t ask you if I didn\u2019t absolutely have to.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Another sigh. \u201cFine. Make it quick,\u201d I say. \u201cThere\u2019s only a few minutes until the next bell goes off, and we can\u2019t be seen together. You know how word travels around here, and I don\u2019t want Trixie catching wind of any of this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">She nods, swallowing before she speaks. \u201cI need your help,\u201d she begins. \u201cI\u2019ll be heading out of the city this weekend for\u2026for work.\u201d She gives me a knowing look, and her expression is somber, like that of a person flooded with guilt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">\u201cI told Bill I\u2019m going to Madison for an important sorority event. If he brings it up to you or mentions anything that sounds unusual about it, I need you to cover for me. \u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">\u201cHow am I supposed to do that?\u201d I say, my own expression incredulous. \u201cWe barely know each other, and as far as he and Trixie are concerned, we\u2019ve pretty much never even had an <em>actual <\/em>conversation. He\u2019ll think it\u2019s odd if I say anything, and it\u2019ll probably only raise his suspicions even more.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">I continue to look around intermittently, my eyes darting left and right, making sure no one else is around as I try to keep my voice down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">\u201cLook, I\u2019m not telling you to bring me up or go into any details or anything like that,\u201d she explains, her shoulders slumped in a clear show of discomfort and perhaps even frustration. \u201cJust try to assure him that I\u2019m telling the truth in case <em>he <\/em>does. Tell him whatever you need to. Better yet, try to change the topic and get his mind off the whole thing if it comes to that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">A slight pause ensues, and I let out a deep sigh as her eyes continue to plead with me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">\u201cI\u2019ll do what I can,\u201d I say finally, feeling sick to my stomach as I hear the words leave my mouth. \u201cBut we can\u2019t be seen together like this,\u201d I warn. \u201cNo more random middle of the day meetings. If you need to talk, come over to the Mushroom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">\u201cOkay,\u201d she says, giving me one last nod of appreciation before she leaves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Seconds after she\u2019s out of sight, the horn goes off, signaling the end of another class period, and my own cue to leave.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">As I walk through the hallway, hearing the rowdy chorus of voices in the distance quickly becoming louder and louder as a stream of people shuffle through the hallways and corridors, I ask myself the same question for the millionth time;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><em>What the fuck have I gotten myself into?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">***<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cOh, my God, you scared the hell out of me!\u201d I hiss, my words breathy and leaving my lips in a panicked rush.
