After almost three thousand years of existence, predictability becomes a placid, enduring norm and, as such, there are only a select few, very rare occasions when something has the ability to surprise me.<\/span><\/p>\n

This<\/em> would be one of them.<\/span><\/p>\n

I watch as the girl advances toward the belvedere, her steps slow and cautious, her eyes wide, seemingly in awe.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mine, on the other hand, bulge for only one reason:<\/span><\/p>\n

Absolute and utter shock.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2026I\u2026can\u2019t believe it\u2026 <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

For a second, I genuinely <\/em>believe my eyes are playing tricks on me, a result of chronic stress and fatigue. But as much as I want to go with that explanation, the undeniable, irrefutable evidence is right in front of me; walking and talking and breathing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Holy Basilisk, she really <\/em>\u044f\u0432\u043b\u044f\u0435\u0442\u0441\u044f a human! <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

But\u2026what the hell is a mortal doing here?<\/span><\/p>\n

How<\/em> is she even here?<\/span><\/p>\n

She obviously isn\u2019t a Reaper: Golden, Silver, or<\/em> Bronze.<\/span><\/p>\n

She isn\u2019t even a fucking spirit<\/em>!<\/span><\/p>\n

The more I think about it, the less sense it makes.<\/span><\/p>\n

What in the hell is going on\u2026? <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

My first instinct is to run over there, pick her up by her neck, and throw her out.<\/span><\/p>\n

But for some reason I hold myself back, observing her as she continues to gaze around her, trailing slender fingers over sculptures and other formations as she goes.<\/span><\/p>\n

She\u2019s obviously fascinated, her curiosity beaming through her large brown eyes, but they also reflect hints of concern, as if she\u2019s worried something bad might happen to her. Her body language mirrors that; her shoulders tense, her back slightly hunched, confirming that her guard is up.<\/span><\/p>\n

She actually seems as lost and confused about this situation as I am.<\/span><\/p>\n

After a few more moments of watching her, I decide to confront her, knowing it\u2019s the only way I\u2019ll get any answers to this bizarre situation.<\/span><\/p>\n

She doesn\u2019t seem to notice me as I approach her, closing some of the distance between us.<\/span><\/p>\n

For some crazy reason, I actually start to feel\u2026nervous<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

But I quickly banish the rare, unexpected emotion, feeling absolutely ridiculous for getting apprehensive over a mere mortal, even briefly.<\/span><\/p>\n

I inhale deeply, mentally reasserting myself and preparing for what might happen.<\/span><\/p>\n

But as soon as I do, I\u2019m met with that scent again.<\/span><\/p>\n

God\u2026Is it me or is it getting stronger\u2026?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Almost instantly, I get become light-headed, but chalk it up to the workload I just recently agreed to take on.<\/span><\/p>\n

But then I inhale again, and my vision slightly blurs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Out of the blue, and for no reason at all, I start to feel ecstatic.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ecstatic and\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Euphoric<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

My body begins to feel light and my skin tingles abnormally, waves of heat swimming beneath its surface, as if I\u2019m standing in an oven.<\/span><\/p>\n

My heart starts racing, beating profusely in my body like a child throwing a major tantrum.<\/span><\/p>\n

It all happens so quickly. I can barely process any of it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Holy crap\u2026I think I\u2019m getting high.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s like I\u2019m feverish but not quite. I\u2019d think I have the stomach flu if I didn\u2019t feel so good.<\/span><\/p>\n

Through my sudden, strange bout of delirium, I vaguely see her eyeing one of the grails intently. I\u2019m getting caught up in how the scent is making me feel, but then she takes the grail and puts it to her mouth and I instantly snap out of my trance.<\/span><\/p>\n

What the fuck?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

In an unusual bout of panic, I go off on her before I can stop myself. \u201cWhat the hell do you think you\u2019re doing?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The girl drops the grail immediately and turns to face me, shaky and bug-eyed.<\/span><\/p>\n

I clearly just spooked her to the bones because she\u2019s looking at me like her skeleton wants to jump out of her skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Instantly, I feel horrible for scaring her like that, but I can\u2019t go back on it now. I need answers, after all.<\/span><\/p>\n

I march over to her and ask her again, \u201cWho are you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Silence.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you doing here?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

More silence.<\/span><\/p>\n

She just keeps gawking at me.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a little annoying.<\/span><\/p>\n

Scratch that.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s very <\/em>annoying.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI asked you a question!\u201d I yell, my irritation getting the better of me. I don\u2019t mean to shout at her, but her closed-mouth routine is really starting to grind my gears.<\/span><\/p>\n

Maybe it\u2019s because I\u2019m a type-A personality Army Commander, but I\u2019m not at all familiar with not being answered when I address someone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hell, I\u2019m \u044d\u0442\u043e <\/em>close to asking her if she\u2019s mute.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shit. <\/em>Is she?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

She turns her head away from me, averting her eyes nervously, and I figure I\u2019ve gone too far. She looks like she\u2019s in frickin\u2019 high school and I\u2019m talking to her as if she\u2019s one of my soldiers.<\/span><\/p>\n

I exhale, figuring it might be better to approach this in a different way, but then\u2026it hits me:<\/span><\/p>\n

All her thoughts and inner ramblings.<\/span><\/p>\n

I can hear them so clearly.<\/span><\/p>\n

And I get hella <\/em>confused by them.<\/span><\/p>\n

She\u2026she\u2019s checking me out?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

I can\u2019t help myself.<\/span><\/p>\n

My ego swells with the knowledge of her attraction to me, but I don\u2019t dare show it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Being admired, sexually or otherwise, is nothing new for me. I\u2019ve grown quite accustomed to\u2014but also weary of\u2014the constant attention over the centuries. But, for some reason, the thought that she\u2019s been eyeing me like that actually makes me\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

\u0421\u0447\u0430\u0441\u0442\u043b\u0438\u0432\u044b\u0439<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

And, strangely enough, I want to hear <\/em>\u042d\u0442\u043e.<\/span><\/p>\n

If I thought she looked spooked before, the way she\u2019s looking at me now definitely takes the cake. It\u2019s comical, and it definitely answers my question.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cH-How\u2026how do you know what I\u2019m thinking?\u201d she finally croaks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Well, there\u2019s a god after all!<\/em> I think.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lady Uncommunicativeness can actually <\/em>verbally communicate.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the minutes that follow, we go back and forth as I explain to her that I can breach her thoughts by reading her vibes. And she has pretty <\/em>strong vibes, especially for a human.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her voice is\u2026interesting<\/em>:<\/span><\/p>\n

A bit hoarse and raspy, meshed with an unusual, melodious undertone and topped off with a sensual, whispery quality.<\/span><\/p>\n

Like a kitten\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n

I absolutely love it.<\/span><\/p>\n

And I want, need<\/em>, to hear more of it.<\/span><\/p>\n

As if on cue, the scent finds its way to my nostrils again, intoxicating me and filling my lungs with its crisp, unique aroma.<\/span><\/p>\n

Between her purry voice and the elating fragrance, I quickly find myself getting aroused, feeling the onset of my dick starting to harden.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m not exactly sure what\u2019s happening, but it\u2019s almost as if I\u2019m on autopilot, concerned only with the intense sensations I\u2019m currently feeling.<\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, we\u2019re conversing. I know that.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m talking with her and she\u2019s talking with me. I\u2019m aware of what I\u2019m saying and everything she\u2019s saying, but I\u2019m just way more focused on the pace of her words, her articulation, her tone, her breathiness, and the overall air of her voice.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s not intentional, and I can\u2019t seem to stop it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then I realize she wants to leave.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not yet. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

She can\u2019t go just yet. I need her to stay a little longer. I curse myself for being so captivated by her voice.<\/span><\/p>\n

Quick, think of something you blockhead!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Yes! That\u2019s it!<\/em>\u00a0 \u201cWhat were you doing with the chalice?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

I might be trying to keep her here for my own reasons, but it\u2019s a legitimate question.<\/span><\/p>\n

She\u2019d seemed awfully interested in it. Heck, she was about to down it like some mimosa. What on Earth was she thinking, taking it as if she was at a damn cocktail party?<\/span><\/p>\n

I mean, there\u2019s no way she could have known what was in it\u2026could she?<\/span><\/p>\n

She looks away nervously. \u201cOh\u2026I just\u2026I was just looking at it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Even if I hadn\u2019t seen her take the chalice with my own two eyes, her averted gaze and stammers are dead giveaways that she obviously tried to do much more than just look<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

I feel a grin creep up on me.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s actually kind of cute; how badly she lies.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s as though she\u2019s just learning how. She can\u2019t fool anyone to save her life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLiar,\u201d I say, but the statement is more of a tease than an accusation.<\/span><\/p>\n

She rolls her eyes at my remark.<\/span><\/p>\n

The gesture is strangely cute, too\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

Wait, wait, back up.<\/span><\/p>\n

What the fuck? Why do I find everything \u2018cute\u2019 all of a sudden?<\/span><\/p>\n

So, why am I suddenly okay with things I normally don\u2019t tolerate?<\/span><\/p>\n

Without warning, another wave of the scent hits me, much harder this time, catapulting me from my conflicted thoughts.<\/span><\/p>\n
