Her eyes instantly go wide, her expression morphing into that of a stunned deer, as if she just got hit by a bulldozer.<\/span><\/p>\n

She looks at me with utter confusion and embarrassment, clearly shocked that I\u2019m asking. As if she can\u2019t believe I could <\/em>ask such a thing.<\/span><\/p>\n

She blinks rapidly and swallows, averting her gaze once again.<\/span><\/p>\n

I guess that pretty much answers my question. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAh, fuck,\u201d I mutter before I can stop myself.<\/span><\/p>\n

As soon as the words leave my lips, she looks at me with surprise, dismay even, but only briefly. Just as quickly, she lowers her head, her eyes cast to the floor while her guard goes all the way up.<\/span><\/p>\n

I feel her push at me, clearly trying to put some space between us and probably to get away from me altogether.<\/span><\/p>\n

She\u2019s shutting me out.<\/span><\/p>\n

And I\u2019m left feeling like an ass.<\/span><\/p>\n

I just went from three-sixty to zero with her in no time at all. We had such a great tempo going and I just had to go fuck it up with a stupid question.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t mean that,\u201d I blurt, trying to salvage the situation.<\/span><\/p>\n

She takes her hand from mine and wraps her arms tightly around herself, still averting her gaze. \u201cWell\u2026it shouldn\u2019t be.\u201d Her words leave her lips in little above a whisper, the statement almost shy, but her tone is somewhat\u2026sad.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now I\u2019m confused all over again.<\/span><\/p>\n

She shrugs, her slender shoulders gently rising and falling in a show of false nonchalance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBecause we won\u2019t ever see each other after this,\u201d she explains, \u201c\u2026unless of course I get hit by a bus or have a piano fall on me tomorrow and you come to take my soul away.\u201d She adjusts her posture and clears her throat. \u201cSo you see, Mr. Reaper, exchanging names is pointless.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

I can\u2019t help but chuckle. \u201cMr. Reaper?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
