The physical result of hard work, patience, passion and perseverance.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n The acceptance letter to Earth Capital.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n No\u2026your<\/em> acceptance letter to Earth Capital.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Your one-way ticket to an elite, singular internship with one of the most prestigious environmental consulting companies in the world\u2014even if said ticket doesn\u2019t currently look so prestigious itself.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n In just under a day, it\u2019s gone from its original crisp, immaculate appearance to visibly handled, with two dog ears and a small tear at the bottom.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Maybe you have<\/em> read it too many times.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cI still can’t believe I got picked,\u201d you murmur, mostly to yourself, but you\u2019re pretty sure Peyton hears you.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Your eyes flit away for a moment, locking on the ice in your citrus green tea. Idly, you stare at the transparent, identical cubes as they float adjacent to one another.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n A strange, novel sentiment washes over you. One you can\u2019t really describe. Like coins that can\u2019t be aligned no matter how they\u2019re stacked, even when they\u2019re practically indistinguishable.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n You\u2019re far from superstitious, despite your religious upbringing. The oddity of this sentiment, however, feels somewhat\u2026foreboding.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n You have no idea why such a random, melancholic thought would cross your mind during what\u2019s supposed<\/em> to be a triumphant, momentous time in your life.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n You poke absently at one of them with the straw, submerging it completely in the yellow-green brew for a few seconds before it finds its way up from under the pressure. You repeat the action on the cube next to it. And the next. Until you\u2019re not even sure what exactly you\u2019re doing, anymore. You graduate to swirling the entire drink, the light chime of ice against glass interjecting sporadically. Nervous, pent-up energy bubbles up from nowhere, possessing you, demanding you expend some of it.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n You swirl too quickly, inertia spilling your tea. The spatter misses your phone and the letter by a hair, your best friend managing to swipe them both away just in the nick of time.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Peyton saves the day once again.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Then<\/em> again, she’s always had really good reflexes. And being a former college volleyball player and martial arts enthusiast only adds to her agility. Your feelings are definitely mixed, partial, and just generally all over the place right now. Your mind is sort of on its own speedometer, going a million miles a second as too many thoughts struggle to go through it at the same time.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d you shrug. \u201cI guess I’m just still in shock. But when she looks up again, a newly-formed grin meets you and, pretty soon, her full, naturally-puckered lips spread into a full-fledged, gorgeous smile.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n You\u2019ve probably seen it over a million times at this point and somehow it still has the ability to turn your heart to putty.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Typical Peyton Baxter.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n She has one of those unbelievably radiant, engulfing smiles that can light up an entire football stadium. Seriously. But she also possesses this inherent, natural serenity, beaming as effortlessly as she breathes, even when she isn\u2019t flashing her pearly whites. A true beauty. Inside and out. She doesn\u2019t even have to say anything. It’s one of the things that makes her so approachable. So likable. And it sure as hell gets the guys fawning over her like kids over Halloween candy. It\u2019s no surprise she never has issues meeting new people or making new friends.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Can’t exactly say the same for yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve said it before but it deserves repeating: I’m really proud of you, Connie,\u201d she says, interjecting your thoughts, the sweetest, most genuine expression splayed across her pretty face. \u201cNo one inherently deserves anything but you\u2019ve earned<\/em> this more than anyone. You should be really proud of yourself, too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Your chest goes tight hearing the sincerity in her words. From the way she commends you. At how supportive she always is. And you just want to reach across the table and give her the biggest hug in the world. But a heavy feeling quickly settles in your gut, ensuring you stay put.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cThanks, Pey,\u201d you whisper, your voice strained, your throat constricting. You should<\/em> be proud.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n For someone about to begin her final semester of college, you can\u2019t imagine a better way to end your undergrad career than getting accepted into the annual, full-time internship program at Earth Capital.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Every single year, there are well over fifteen thousand seniors from top schools all over the country who desperately want and fight incredibly hard for the coveted, sole spot at the prestigious environmental consulting firm. It’s common knowledge that Earth Capital, informally dubbed \u201cEarth Cap\u201d, pretty much guarantees post-grad success; turning lowly interns into vetted, high-demand professionals who write their own checks and get their pick of countless, top-earning clients across all industries, no matter what they choose to specialize in. There was even a credibly-sourced rumor floating around about the last intern who was, apparently, offered integral, far-from-entry-level positions with, not one, but twelve<\/em> Fortune 500 companies right out of the gate.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n So, naturally, as soon as you got the good news\u2014and once you were done screaming and jumping up and down in front of the mailbox like a crazy person\u2014you called in and confirmed your receipt, as per the instructions.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n You start tomorrow.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n And you can hardly wait.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n But, in spite of the edge and all the advantages this internship bestows on its victor, you didn\u2019t make its acquisition your year-long obsession and objective because of monetary prospects or exclusive credentials. Nor did you do so for the potential bragging rights you could toss in the faces of your mother and father\u2014who were both very vocal about and critical of your choice to switch from pre-med to environmental science half-way through college, insisting it was the biggest mistake of your young life.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n As unoriginal as it sounds, the reason you jumped at the chance to work for Earth Capital, the “holy grail” of environmental consultancy, is because you genuinely want to make the world a better place.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Yes, it\u2019s clich\u00e9 as hell. Almost childishly so. And, yes<\/em>, pretty much everyone<\/em> says that.
